How can the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) assist me?

It’s not uncommon to find ourselves experiencing stress or feeling anxious in life. Perhaps worrying about events from the past or ones yet to happen in the future. Or generally overwhelmed by unhelpful thoughts, beliefs or emotions.

When we feel this way it seems a never ending struggle to achieve the joyful and satisfying lives we desire. We can feel stuck with living with emotional trauma, chronic physical pain, compulsions and addictions, or perhaps just an empty feeling inside, leading, as Henry David Thoreau famously said, “”lives of quiet desperation”.

Tapping can be used to reduce the stress and anxiety that is interfering with your happiness and well-being. You can use Tapping to help you fall asleep at night, to help you overcome your paralyzing fear of driving, and everything in between.

What exactly is EFT or tapping?

It is a powerful method based on clinical research showing that emotional trauma compromises both physical and emotional health.

EFT uses elements of Cognitive Therapy combined with Acupressure, in the form of fingertip tapping on 13 acupuncture points. For that reason EFT is often called “tapping.”

EFT uses these same meridians used in traditional acupuncture to treat emotional and physical ailments for over 5,000 years. The human body is a network of electrical circuits that run along a specific network of channels. These are your energy meridians.

The Chinese discovered that by stimulating these meridians they could heal the human body. Simple tapping with the fingertips is used on specific meridians on the upper body while focusing on a specific problem – whether it’s a specific event, a physical pain or a specific issue etc.

Tapping helps you access your body’s energy and send signals to the part of the brain that controls stress. This stimulates the meridian points and can reduce the stress or negative emotion you feel from your issue, ultimately restoring balance to your disrupted energy.

During the session i guide you through gently tapping specific points on the body, primarily on the head, face and fingers in a particular sequence. While doing this, i guide you to talk and focus on the issue that you wish to treat. This can be a fear, a worry, or any unresolved problem. While maintaining your mental focus on this issue, you use your fingertips to tap 5-7 times on these meridian points of the body.

Does EFT work?

Over 100 clinical trials published in peer-reviewed medical and psychology journals have shown that EFT is effective for anxiety, depression, PTSD, pain, phobias, and many physical diagnoses. EFT is able to rapidly reduce the emotional impact of memories and incidents that trigger emotional distress.

EFT has been used to effectively treat war veterans and active military with PTSD. In a 2013 studyTrusted Source, researchers studied the impact of EFT tapping on veterans with PTSD against those receiving standard care.

Within a month, participants receiving EFT coaching sessions had significantly reduced their psychological stress. In addition, more than half of the EFT test group no longer fit the criteria for PTSD.

2016 reviewTrusted Source compared the effectiveness of using EFT tapping over standard care options for anxiety symptoms. The study concluded there was a significant decrease in anxiety scores compared to participants receiving other care.
